Engaging Schools: Fostering High School Students' Motivation to Learn

Abstract

Engaging Schools is the result of a 17-month study conducted by the Committee on Increasing High School Students' Engagement and Motivation to Learn. The study committee was organized through the Board on Children, Youth, and Families of the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine and was sponsored by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The report includes a timely and comprehensive synthesis and analysis of evidence on academic engagement and motivation that is relevant to urban high schools. Specifically, the report examines how curriculum, instruction, climate, the organization of schools or alternative educational environments, support for teachers, and connections to the community can promote involvement of urban youth in school and learning. Evidence on the effect of policies such as tracking and high-stakes testing on student engagement is also reviewed.
